HW2: Design and Usability Critique


 For this assignment, I decided to pick the website https://www.apple.com/. 

1. Simplicity (Score: 10/10)


I think it is pretty simple and minimalistic. Its front page does not have unnecessary design elements. All the buttons have a functional purpose. I think it is very easy for visitors to this website to find what they are looking for. 


Colors: The creators of this website decided to use a monochromatic color scheme. The front page has black, white, and two shades of gray. This color scheme makes the website design more elegant. It also creates a bold, dramatic look while still being soft and tasteful to the eye.


Typefaces: All the typefaces of this website are legible. Front page has sans serif fonts that belong to the Arial family. The letters are either black on white or white on black or dark gray. It creates a good contrast between the typefaces and the background. It is normally recommended to use a maximum of three different typefaces in a maximum of three different sizes, and the developers of this website followed this rule.


Graphics: On this website, there are not too many images. Visitors can see a few photos of Apple products and ads of this brand's services. This is a great way to keep the website accessible to all users because sometimes people might have poor service, and good-quality images might take too long to load. 


2. Visual Hierarchy (Score: 10/10)


The main heading, "iPhone 14 Pro," on this website is right in the middle of the front page. It draws the visitor’s attention and makes them look at the new Apple device. On top of it, there is the text "Donate to support families affected by the war in Ukraine," which prompts action. Users can click this CTA, or scan the navigation menu above for more services or products.


3. Navigability (Score: 9/10)


The primary navigation structure is simple and located on top of the front page. It is duplicated in the footer of it. It also includes a search icon in the navigation menu on the top of the website so visitors can search by keywords.


4. Consistency (Score: 8/10)


The overall look and feel of the website is similar across all of its pages. The backgrounds, color schemes, and typefaces are the same. However, some pages have one or two dynamic elements. It is probably a good thing because the same layout on all the pages makes the website a little dull. 


5. Responsivity (Score: 10/10)


By looking at this website, the visitors can see that Apple invested a lot in a highly flexible website structure. Https://www.apple.com/ is a 100% responsive site. Its content is automatically resized and reshuffled to fit the dimensions of whichever device a visitor happens to use. This provides excellent UX across different devices.


6. Accessibility (Score: 8/10)


The website follows the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), developed by the Web Accessibility Initiative and the World Wide Web Consortium. It is:

Perceivable: Visitors are aware of the content on this website.

Operable: The functionality of https://www.apple.com/ is possible in different ways.

Understandable: The website's content can be easily understood by any visitor.

Robust: The website is usable across different assistive technologies, devices, and browsers.


7. Conventionality (Score: 8/10)


The main navigation menu is placed at the top of a page. The Apple logo is placed at the top left of the front page, and it is clickable. Also, https://www.apple.com/ has elements that change color when you hover over them. The website has a shopping bag icon. It can have a number on top, signifying the number of items the visitor wants to purchase.


8. Credibility (Score: 10/10)


I think this website provides a great user experience. Apple as a brand is straightforward and honest about the products and services it sells. All the prices and details are also listed on the website. Overall, this website appears trustworthy and legitimate.


9. User-Centricity (Score: 8/10)


According to Website Grader, the performance of the website could be improved. The score is 14/30. The SEO score is very good, 25/30. This helps to generate organic traffic. However, the site needs some optimization for mobile devices. This website has a perfect security score. It is equipped with an SSL certificate, and free from vulnerabilities, is now the standard online.
